It was my third week of training as a train driver. I was in an
engine with an experienced driver.
We were about to reach Igatpuri when we didn’t get a signal
and we had to stop the train in the heart of the jungle before
the station. While we were chatting and waiting for the signal
I saw an extremely old woman beggar coming from my side of the jungle.
I took her as some nearby villager and avoided her. Suddenly
I heard an ancient voice saying ‘BHAI JAAN KUCH KHANE KO DO… BAHUT BUKH LAGI HAI’
(please give something to eat brother… I’m extremely hungry). By the time
I turned to look I realized that the woman had put her hand inside the window
for begging very close to my shirt. And then many things happened at the same time.
The other driver pushed me back very roughly and closed the window by pushing
thr woman with a stick and then I saw the woman’s eyes go completely blood shot
and to date I clearly remember her saying ‘TUJHE HISAAB CHUKAANA PADEGA BUDDHE’
(you’ll pay for it old man). A few minutes later, when she suddenly disappeared,
I asked that man “Was she angry because we didn’t give her any food?”
(that means I still didn’t realize who was she). And then he said,
“Look down and see the height of this engine.” I looked down from window
and saw that the engine was about 140 to 150 centimeters high. And then he
said, “What kind of human would be tall enough to put a hand inside windows
this high?” I couldd have fainted there. Several things came to my mind.
That was the scariest moment of my life.
